According to the theory of emotional cognition, emotions are rational and play a necessary role in personal cognition and decision-making.With the help of emotional cognition theory, the cause of muse's tragedy are decoded by tracing the dichotomous cognitive patterns that dominate Mary Anerton's muse identity construction in the short story The Muse's Tragedy.Under the influence of the binary opposition thinking that prioritizes rationality,Anerton,as the supposed emotional subject, neglects her deep emotional needs in both self-construction and construction by others, resulting in the split of her body and mind. When actively constructing herself in a binary opposition pattern, she finds herself trapped in self-doubt,self-denial,and self-isolation.When being constructed by others in a binary opposition pattern, she cannot avoid being rationalized, idealized, and deified, completely detached from complex desires.Consequently, the novel's final return to emotion and complexity narrative to unveil muse's true emotions and repair the marginalized female self that has been erased by the mainstream cognition, questioning and backlashing against the bias of binary opposition thinking.
