中国最早的诗歌自译集《华质英文》初探

摘　　要：戈鲲化的《华质英文》自2000年面世以来,引起一些研究者的关注,他们从中美文化交流和汉语国际教育的视角进行研究和阐发,将之定性为中国人编写的最早的汉语国际教育教材,这当然是颇有见地的。但研究者也忽略了一个重要的事实:这部作品里的诗词全都是戈鲲化自己的创作,再由他自己翻译成英文,内容和形式都很特别,完全不同于普通教材。这一特征表明《华质英文》是一部不折不扣的诗歌自译集,而且是中国翻译史上最早的诗歌自译集,其意义不容忽视。本文详细考证该书的创作和翻译过程,描述其具体内容和影响,证明中国的诗歌自译早在19世纪后半叶就颇具规模,已经聚篇成集,这在翻译史上有着独特的价值和意义,值得进一步研究。Since its publication in 2000, Ge Kunhua's Chinese Verse and Prose has attracted the attention of some researchers. They havestudied and expounded on it fromthe perspectives of Sino-US cultural exchange and Chinese as a foreign language teaching, and definedit as the earliest textbook for teaching Chinese as a foreign language compiled by a Chinese person. This is indeed a perceptive view.However, researchers have overlooked an important fact: all the poems in this work were written by Ge Kunhua and then translated intoEnglish by himself. The content and formare very unique and completely different fromordinary textbooks. This feature indicates thatthe work is an unadulterated self-translated poetry collection and the earliest such collection in Chinese translation history. Its significancecannot be ignored. This article meticulously examines the creation and translation process of the book, describes its specific contentand influence, and proves that poetry self-translation in China had already reached a considerable scale and formed a collection bythe late 19th century. This has unique value and significance in translation history and deserves further study.
