星使楷模:《北华捷报/字林西报》与郭嵩焘形象的塑造

摘　　要：近代文学是以报刊为中心的文学时代,媒介与传播是不可或缺的重要阐释立场。郭嵩焘使西是中国外交体制初创期的标志性事件,《北华捷报/字林西报》等英文报刊对此进行关注和推动,极大拓展了郭嵩焘外交活动和言论著述的海外传播和影响力,在这个意义上,郭嵩焘真正走出国门,走向世界。该报坚持“扬郭抑刘”的叙述立场,选译、改写《使西纪程》,宣扬以英国为代表的西方文化价值观,对日记的传播及其“经典化”起到重要作用。该报着意呈现郭嵩焘游刃有余的日常外交细节,是西方意识形态下引导和规训的结果。《北华捷报/字林西报》对郭嵩焘使西活动的书写建构起关于晚清外交官员的叙事逻辑和框架,塑造了一位走向世界的星使楷模形象,成为近代新媒介语境下,新闻生产、文学想象与形象建构的典型样本。Modern literature is a literary era centered on the press,and media and communication are in indispensable and important interpretive positions.Guo Songtao's visit to the West is a landmark event in the nascent period of China's diplomatic system.With the attention and promotion of English-language newspapers and magazines such as The North China Herald/North China Daily News,the overseas dissemination of Guo Songtao's diplomatic activities and writings and their influence have been greatly expanded.In this sense,Guo Songtao,the first minister,has really stepped out of his country and gone into the world.Adhering to the narrative position of“promoting Guo and suppressing Liu”,the newspaper selects,translates,and rewrites“The Journey to the West”to promote the Western cultural values represented by Britain,which plays an important role in the dissemination of the diary and its“classicization”.The newspaper's interest in presenting the details of Guo Songtao's fluent daily diplomacy was merely the result of Western ideological guidance and discipline.The writing of Guo Songtao's activities in the West in The North China Herald/North China Daily News constructs a narrative logic and framework of the late Qing diplomatic officials.It shapes the image of a model star ambassador to the world,which becomes a typical sample of the production of journalism,literary imagination,and image construction in the context of the new media in the modern era.
