摘　　要：对地理环境内涵、作用、意义进行了分析 ,地理环境是人类赖以生存的基础 ,是可持续发展的前提 ,西北的开发应当把保护地理环境放在重要的地位 ,开发要以环境承受能力为限制 ,坚持可持续发展战略 ,促进自然环境、经济增长和社会进步协调发展 ,为当代人也为后代人造就一个良好的可持续发展的地理环境。An analysis is made of the concept,functions and importance of geoeraphical environment.It is argued that geographical environment is the basis for human survival and the prerequisite to sustainable development.Importance should be attached to the protection of geographical environment in the development of China's northwestern region.This development should be subject to the bearing capability of the geographical environment.The strategy of sustainable development should be carried out to promote the coordinated development between natural environment,economic growth and social progress.
