摘　　要：马可波罗是西方中世纪最伟大的旅行家,他是在中国知名度最高的意大利人。《马可波罗行纪》指引了无数代西方人向东方探索,因其中有不少地质矿产的记载,故意大利地质学界认为他是其故乡威尼斯所在的威尼斯区从事地质研究的先驱者。本文择要摘录其有关内容并加以考证。Marco Polo(1254-Jan.9,1324,Venezia),the most famous Italian well-known in China,was the greatest traveller in the Mediaeval West. The Book of Marco Polo,a grand book with such a deep influence in the West that is incomparable besides the Bible,has been a guide of numberless Westerners'exploration to the East.The original manuscript of this book is still undiscovered and might be missed, which is generally believed to be one written in Old French with some characteristics of Italic.But the statistical data show that there were near one handred ancient manuscripts written in French, Latin,Italic as well as German,and alarger number of offprints and research works has come into existence since the Fifteenth Century.The Italian geologists have considered Marco Polo as the pioneer in the field of Venetian geology due to the su- bstantial information of geology and mineral deposits recorded in the Book of Marco Polo,which is accordingly abstracted here as following:
