摘　　要：厄普代克的"《红字》三步曲"之《S.》与其原型《红字》有着广泛而紧密的互文联系。通过对二者的互文研究,可以在厄普代克身上发现来自霍桑的灵感与影响。强烈的互文特色使我们感到,从《红字》的时代至今,美国社会与文化中的性与宗教的观念并未改变,妇女仍然处于男权主义的压迫之下。美国人仍然需要摆脱过去,重塑自我。This essay examins intertextuality of John Updike's S. with The Scarlet Letter in characterization, plot design and symbolism. Strong evidences of parallel points between the two novels indicate that Updike has not only been inspired by Hawthorne's personal experience and his art of fiction, but also accepted his ideas about American values of sexual and religious life.
