摘　　要：我们仍然面临着先辈们所面临的问题,即生存问题。我们依然依赖于自然界,因为我们本身就是自然的一部分。我们对自然的依赖并不能因为科学技术的发展而有所减弱,因为科技并不能确保我们的生存。人类与自然友善相处,与自然保持一种和谐的关系是人类赖以生存的关键。社会文化价值观与可持续发展有着极为密切的关系。这或许就是我们从"Motherland"的始源意义所能看到的。We still face the same problems that our ancestors faced--problems of survival. We are still absolutely and finally dependent on the nature of this world in that we are still part of nature and our dependence on nature cannot be lessened by our technology nor can that technology ensure our survival. That will depend on one factor only--our success or failure in making man live in peace, showing goodwill to each other and harmonizing the relationship between man and nature. Therefore, social and cultural values are relevant to the study of sustainable developments.
