Objective:To explore the potential effects of dietary fish on blood pressure level in healthy Chinese urban and rural population. Methods:The PRC-USA collaborative study on cardiovascular and cardiopulmonary diseases was carried out on urban and rural samples in Beijing and Guangzhou. With international standardized epidemiology methods, men and women aged 35 to 54 years old were surveyed. Dietary data were obtained in 1 264 subjects using three 24 hr recalls. Results:The average fish and seafood consumption of the Chinese was 46 g per day. After adjusted for age,the levels of systolic blood pressure(SBP)and diastolic blood pressure(DBP)decreased gradually with an increase of fish protein consumption (p<0.0001 in both SBP and DBP). Significant inverse relationship was found between DBP and dietary fish intake, after adjusted for age, sex, site,BMI,energy intake, alcohol consumption, smoking and sodium intake. The correlation coefficients of fish intake with SBP and DBP were-0.0428 and - 0.0894,respectively.Conclusion: There is a correlation between blood pressure and dietary fish consumption. The result of this study support the hypothesis that higher dietary fish and seafood intake has favorable influences on blood pressure.
