摘　　要：该文从委婉语的避讳功能、礼貌功能、掩饰功能及幽默讽刺功能四个方面进行阐述,证实委婉语在社会交际中的重要作用;说明了委婉语是一种修辞格,更是一种交际手段,是一种语言现象,亦是一种社会现象。The fact that euphemism plays an important role in the social communicati on is confirmed with the exposition on the four communicativ e functions of euphemism:avoidance of taboo,expression of politeness,con-cealment of truth,and humor &satire.Also indicated is the fact that euph emism is both a rhetorical device and a communicative means,both a linguis tic phenomenon and a.social phenome non.
