To study the characteristics of skeletal muscles with aging in protein metabolism and the mechanisms of prevention by isometric exercise and Chinese massage,48 rats were divided into the control group aged 6 months, the control group aged 18 months, and the therapeutic group aged 18 months. The last group was treated by isometric exercise and Chinese massage manipulation for 6 weeks. Protein in skeletal muscles and creatinine and 3-Methylhistidine in urine were measured in experiment rats. Results: The results indicated that protein in skeletal muscles obviously descended, and creatinine and 3-Methylhistidine in urine in 24 hours obviously increased in the senior rats. The treatment of isometric exercise along with Chinese massage manipulation could enhance protein in skeletal muscles, and depress creatinine and 3-Methylhistidine in urine. Conclusion:Protein anabolism was gradually decreasing and protein catabolism was gradually increasing in rats with aging. Chinese traditional rehabilitation maneuvers, isometric exercise of Chinese massage along with Chinese massage manipulation, could correct the abnormal protein metabolism and delay the skeletal muscles degeneration with aging.
