Objectives: To study the expressions of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and type-1 TGF-β receptor (TβR-I), and their relationships to clinicopathological characteristics in cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) and basal cell carcinomas (BCC). Methods: The expression of TGF-β1 and TβR-I was determined by ABC immunohistochemical technique in 48 cutaneous SCCs and 41 BCCs. Results: The expression of TGF-β1 and TβR-1in SCCs was significantly higher than that in BCCs (P < 0.05). TβR-1 expression in well differentiated SCCs was upregulated compared with the poorly differentiated one (P < 0.05), but TGF-β1 expression was not related to the histological grade (P > 0.05). Although significantly positive correlation was observed between the expression of TGF-β1 and TβR-I in SCCs (r=0.739,P < 0.001) and in BCCs (r=0.716,P < 0.001), their expression was not correlated with sex, age, course of diseases, tumor location, primary or metastasic tumors, lymph node metastasis and aggressiveness of BCC (P > 0.05) in SCCs and BCCs. Conclusions: The expression of TGF-β1 may not be related to tumor differentiation, aggressiveness and lymph node metastasis.
