摘　　要：Based on a study of the typological features and chronological assignation of the pottery shards unearthed from Chinese sites more than 9,000 years old, the present paper comes to the conclusion that Chinese pottery had originated pluralistically by the 15^th millennium before present. At the begin-ning, its form was concerned with human beings' living settings and customs. The early shards discov-ered in North China do not represent the incipient stage of pottery origination, the mechanism of whichwas not involved with primitive agriculture but with the development of gathering, hunting and fishing economy.
