Van Gogh is the representative painter of Dutch post-Impressionism, and Anselm Kiefer is the representative painter of German neo-expressionism. Kiefer “borrowed” the symbol of sunflower from Van Gogh and integrated his personal thinking to form a unique personal style. The sunflower is the key to the spiritual connection between Kiefer and Van Gogh, and is a crucial artistic carrier in the paintings of both. Based on modern Western art, this paper makes a comparative analysis of the sunflower symbols in the works of Van Gogh and Kiefer. In Van Gogh’s works, the sunflower is yellow, symbolizing the sun, with light and heat, bright and warm colors. In Kiefer’s works, sunflowers are often dry and withered, symbolizing destruction and renewal, which implies Kiefer’s thoughts on human existence and the fate of Germany after its defeat in World War II.
