Bulimia, a psychological disorder, typically presents with symptoms of uncontrolled binge eating that are recurring and accompanied by intense feelings of depression. Research has found that negative emotions and maladaptive emotion regulation strategies play a role in the development and maintenance of bulimia. Among them, anger and sadness, as well as negative emotions related to interpersonal experiences (such as disappointment, hurt, or loneliness) were significantly related to the occurrence of bulimia. People with bulimia tend to suppress and ruminate on their unwanted emotions, which leads to more psychopathic thoughts and symptoms. Evidence for a causal link between negative emotions and overeating is inconclusive, and research is still limited. Research has found that increased negative affect is an antecedent to overeating. However, there appears to be little support for binge eating as a means of mitigating negative effects. Therefore, this article reviews the research progress of emotion regulation in patients with bulimia.
