Reporting verbs play an important role in literature reviews of academic discourse, but it is difficult for the author to use them properly. Following Hyland’s classification of reporting verbs, this paper makes an investigation into reporting verbs used by native English speakers based on corpus with the aim of helping English learners in the process of writing. From the perspectives of frequency, tense, syntax and evaluative meaning, this paper draws the following conclusions: 1) Native English speakers use reporting verbs more flexibly, including research, discourse and cognition acts verbs;2) High-frequency reporting verbs have their own ways in tense and syntactic structure;3) Suggest, which denotes negative meanings, is often collocated with adversative adverb or adverbs.
