摘　　要：这本书的中文名称长了些,英文却很扼要:只Readings in Stylistics。我想这是汉语分辨力强于英语的一例。人们在翻译英语著作时,常常抱怨汉语词汇不够丰富,不如英语的分辨力强,这里的例子说明语言都各有所长各有所短。The unrestrained application of linguistic methods to the analysis of literary style gave rise to Stanley Fish's question: What ground is there to insist that meaning is inherent in the structures rather than read into them? It is argued in this article that discourse meaning is through linguistic data. However, to get to the depth of style as representative of an author, linguistic analysis has to be made in consideration of related extralinguistic data.
