摘  要:不同的翻译目的和对象有着不同的翻译标准。本文通过对中国翻译史简述及对严复提出“信达雅”一百年以来译坛对“雅”字的争议 ,向本刊在 2 0 0 1年第 2期刊登的题为“严复的‘信、达、雅’须要再认识”一文提出质疑 ,认为严复的“信达雅”何时都不会成为“译事的最高原则”。Different aims and readers of translation have different standards. This article gives a brief introduction of history of Chinese translation as well as the disputes for the word 'Elegance' raised by Yan Fu during the past century. The purpose of doing these is questioning the arguments from the article 'The Necessity of Further Understanding of Faithfulness,Expressiveness and Elegance' published in the magazine 'Language and Translation',2001,(2). My viewpoint is Yan Fu's theory of 'Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance' is not 'the highest principle of translation'at any time.
