浅谈英语中的委婉语及其运用

摘　　要：委婉语是一种替代表达语,用较温和的或含糊的表达方式来替代一种粗俗和生硬的说 法,即通过语言系统中的语法修辞手段来表达具有委婉功能的语言现象。由于文化的差异,不同 民族的委婉语表现形式也不尽相同。文章探讨了委婉语的含义、起源及分类,并从虚拟语气、过 去时、肯定、否定和反问等方面对英语委婉语的表达方式及应用范围进行了全面的研究。旨在帮 助英语学习者在社会交流中准确恰当地使用这一交际手段。A euphemism is substitution of a mild or vague expression for a harsh or blunt one, namely , it is a linguistic phenomenon that can describe the euphemism function by grammatical rhetoric in linguistic system. Because of different cultures, euphemisms in different nations have their own features. This paper expounds the definition , origin, and classification of English euphemisms, and then systematically discusses its forms of expression and application in social communication by subjunctive mood, past tense, positive, negative, and rhetorical questions etc. It aims at helping English learners have a profound understanding of English euphemisms and properly use them in social intercourse.
