留美中国学生的课堂沉默现象探析

摘　　要：本文通过对三位留美中国学生的课堂交际模式进行案例分析,揭示并发掘中国学生在美国课堂中之所以沉默的诸多诱发因素,并因此提出了一系列的相关问题。本文谈及有关沉默现象的各种理论阐释,认为沉默是一种交际表现,具有多种功能,同时蕴含着深刻的文化内涵。具体到其中的文化因素,本文认为,沉默现象与面子理论相关,而中国人特有的面子观又对留美中国学生的课堂沉默现象产生直接的影响。Through the lens of three focal Chinese students, this paper explores dimensions in addition to linguistic explanation of the silent behavior of Chinese students in American classrooms. We made an attempt to explain how interactions among multiple factors account for the differential silence patterns of these students. As insiders of the Chinese culture, we offer cultural-specific explanations grounded in a theoretical framework of silence and the face-saving and politeness strategies deeply-rooted in the Chinese context.
