Drawing on the insights from neurological and psychological studies of the oral reading process, this paper postulates that oral reading involves a reader,s language perception, comprehension and production, thus reflecting learners, L2 proficiency. This hypothesis was tested in an empirical study using oral reading tasks. Participants were a total of 125 college students. Their oral reading was recorded, transcribed, tagged and analyzed. The results showed that reading aloud was a complicated process entailing a variety of language knowledge and skills, such as pronunciation and intonation, lexical knowledge, syntactic processing, comprehension of sentences and discourse. When properly designed, reading aloud can be used to test a reader,s L2 proficiency.
