Typical Chinese and English verbs of article change are huan(换) and change, respectively, which denote a type of article transfer. Chinese article-change sentences differ from their English counterparts. The Chinese sentences may profile the initial stage of the process, making prominent the article to be replaced, or profile the final stage, making prominent the article to be replaced for. The English counterparts, on the other hand, may profile the initial stage only. The Chinese construction, which dates from the ancient Chinese, is motivated cognitively and pragmatically. Based on relevant studies, the present study demonstrates the internal interaction between semantics and syntax within each language, thus displaying the difference between the two languages because of their different ways of interaction.
