For a long period of time, people have been emphasizing the iconicity of sign language. Since the vocabulary in the sign language is extremely iconic, many people have denied the status of sign language. On the contrary, this paper attempted to demonstrate that sign language possesses beth iconicity and arbitrariness, properties which are also found in phonetic languages such as Chinese and English. The relationship between iconicity and arbitrariness is based on the dimension of strength, and not on a "all - or - none hypothesis". Meanwhile, the arbitrariness of sign language is a strong proof of its status in language.
