摘 要:语言是思想和文化的重要载体,英语教学作为一种特殊的语言教育,蕴涵着特殊的人文价值。现代英语教学既有工具性,又有人文性。大学英语教学在大学生人文素养培养中扮演着重要角色。现代外语教学不仅要培养学生英语交际能力,掌握英语语言知识、技能和运用语言能力,更戛重视学生人文精神的培养和全面素质的发展。Language functions as a very important carrier of culture. As a special language teaching, ELT bears a special humanistic value. ELT is also considered as a strategy for promoting students'humanism, but it has not received the equal attention and importance as it deserves. Thus, this paper is intended as a tentative attempt to explore the functions of ELT in promoting students' humanism. The paper examines the prior research on this issue first and discusses the manifestations of humanism in ELT. Secondly, it explores the significance and functions of promoting humanistic accomplishments in ELT. Finally, it examines the question of how to improve students' humanism in ELT and proposes some suggestions based on the functions of ELT in promoting humanism.
