摘 要:与其说张中行是国学大师,是哲学家,不如说他是守护常识的睿智老人。他所守护的是常人的常情与常识,是文学和学术的常识。通过其著作,他区分了两个层次的常情和常识:一是作为第一天性的天命之性(食色等),二是作为如何对待天命之性的文化习俗(第二天性)。前者只能顺,后者则必须加以反思。因为人类文化常常有违反常识的乌托邦冲动,这种乌托邦冲动又往往以未来的理想来牺牲常人眼前的常情。在乌托邦盛行的20世纪,张中行对常识的守护具有非常重要的现实意义。Rather than a grandmaster of Chinese culture and a philosopher, Zhang Zhongxing is better regarded as a wise and farsighted old man who guards common sense and knowledge. In his writing, Zhang distinguishes two kinds of common sense and knowledge of the ordinary person- human needs as the first nature, such as food and sex, and cultural customs used to deal with the first nature. People can only follow the first kind, but must reflect on the second, because human culture often leads to Utopian impulses which conflict common sense, which usually sacrifice present common needs for a future ideal. Zhang's defence is of great realistic significance in the 20th century when Utopian ideals were popular.
