This study, following Swales' model of genre analysis, aims to explore the citation features of Chinese MA theses in their introduction parts. Through a detailed analysis of 100 texts, the study has revealed the following results: Most students have employed citations in the introduction part of their theses to help establish their research territory for the purpose of creating research space by the choice of specific citation patterns and reporting verbs; however, some problems have also been identified. Some students lack the awareness of the importance of citations by employing very few or even no citations. Chinese MA students tend to use the integral/reporting pattern much more than the other patterns. The students also show a preference for a limited number of reporting verbs, and a predominating use of the Simple Present tense. Chinese students tend to use citations as authoritative support for their own work, with little critical evaluation of previous research, and thus, the overall communicative purpose of the genre of introduction is not very well achieved through citations.
