An Inquiry into Kung-sun Lung's Argument for "Conceptual Independence of Hardness and Whiteness"

摘　　要：This paper believes that Kung-sun Lung’s assertion of "the independence of concepts as a universal rule" in conceiving the world is characteristic of his mode of thinking,and tries to carry out by this approach a consistent and thoroughgoing elucidation of both the thread of reasoning and the axiological orientation contained in his works,namely On White Horse Being not Horse,On Conceptual Independence of Hardness and Whiteness,On Change as a Universal Rule,On Signifiers and Things,and On Name and Essence.It emphasizes that by asserting "the independence of concepts" Kung-sun Lung means to point out the fact that in man’s efforts to conceive the world,"names" or language are always used relatively independent of the actual things,and "concepts" independent of each other,and this is precisely what makes his theory of "rectifying and perfecting the actual according to the essential implied by name" possible.This paper believes that Kung-sun Lung's assertion of 'the independence of concepts as a universal rule' in conceiving the world is characteristic of his mode of thinking,and tries to carry out by this approach a consistent and thoroughgoing elucidation of both the thread of reasoning and the axiological orientation contained in his works,namely On White Horse Being not Horse,On Conceptual Independence of Hardness and Whiteness,On Change as a Universal Rule,On Signifiers and Things,and On Name and Essence.It emphasizes that by asserting 'the independence of concepts' Kung-sun Lung means to point out the fact that in man's efforts to conceive the world,'names' or language are always used relatively independent of the actual things,and 'concepts' independent of each other,and this is precisely what makes his theory of 'rectifying and perfecting the actual according to the essential implied by name' possible.
