Objective To study the relationship between plasma homocysteine (Hcy) level and ischemic stroke in young and middle-aged adults and to evaluate its effects and significance concerning the occurrence and development of ischemic stroke among young and middle-aged adults. Methods The plasma Hcy level of 52 young and middle-aged adults patients with ischemic stroke were measured by means of enzyme linked immunosobent assay (ELISA). Results The plasma Hcy level in ischemic stroke were higher than those in control group. The higher the plasma Hcy level, the bigger the infarcted focus in acute ischemic stroke group of young and middle-aged adults. The plasma Hcy level and the infarcted focus were positively linearly correlated. Conclusions HH is a risk factor of atherosclerotic disease. HH is common in ischemic stroke patients, and its occurrence in the young and middle-aged is higher. The higher the Hcy level, the larger the infarcted focus. Therefore the Hcy can reflect the size of the infarcted focus and the degree of disease. The Hcy level can serve as a kind of regular examination or as an index of disease monitoring and prognosis evaluating so that some intervention can be taken, all of which are of great importance to prevent ischemic stroke and reduce its morbility.
