Based on Walter Benjamin' s four essays on Flaneur, this paper tries to trace the history of Flaneur, the origin of whom is the "man of the crowd" and the detective in Poe' s short stories. The two similar characters in Poe were fragmented into different kinds of people in the streets described in Baudelaire' s poems and essays via the poet' s translation, and they were in turn crystalized into the classical character Flaneur in Benjamin' s translation of Baudelaire, thus becoming one of the most important sources of Benyamin' s ideas on urban modernity. The paper concludes that literary translation is one of the important ways that new ideas are traveling/produced.
