摘　　要：文学阅读是对大学生进行通识教育的有效途径,它带领读者领略不同国家、不同时代的文化思想。以共同的文学意象水/海为切入点,比较阅读康拉德的海洋小说和沈从文的《边城》,从两位作家对人与水/海所代表的自然关系的不同认知,引领学生探讨中西文化以及民族性格对作家的影响及其在各自作品中的反映,感受文字阅读的快乐。Reading literature is an effective way to practice the idea of liberal education among college students. It embodies different culture characteristics which help to shape the students＇ personalities and enrich their minds. Comparing the common images-water and sea, which will help us to understand Frontier City by Shen Congwen and the novels of the sea by Joseph Conrad, the essay shows the cultures and nationality characteristic influence on the authors.
