The connection between beauty and goodness/morality has been a much debated topic in Western philosophy, and the major philosophers, including Kant, usually incline to argue that there is an affinity in them. For Kant, this connection plays an important role in understanding his aesthetics, moral philosophy and even his philosophy as a whole. His Critique of Judgment argues that appreciation and morality are interdependent and mutually beneficial, but they are still independent. In other words, the former can greatly help the development of the latter while the latter can only help lay a basis for the former. His argument reveals a close connection between appreciation and morality which has been misunderstood as "interpretive cyclicism" by some Western philosophers. One the one hand,Kant's aesthetics as a part of his "impure ethics" can make "pure ethics" applied to humans as living beings of limited reason;on the other hand, the development of morality requires all of us to constantly develop the ability of appreciation and an interest in natural beauty. As a result, those who have a good will can better appreciate beauty.
