摘　　要：《荒原》表达了艾略特个人与文化的双重迷惘。说它是"个人"的迷惘,因为它是一部艾略特个人的"心灵史";而它所反映出的文明的危机、世界的幻灭和人的绝望,正是对"文化"迷惘的体现。文章从艾略特本人的生活状态、婚姻状态和宗教思想等方面入手,在对《荒原》所折射出的人的生存状态和社会状况进行分析的基础上,挖掘出艾略特创作《荒原》的根源。THE WASTE LAND expresses the dual confusions of Eliot T S（1888—1965） himself and culture.It is ＂individual＂ confusion,because it is a ＂history of soul＂ of Eliot;The crisis of civilization,the disillusionment of the world and the despair of men reflected in it are the embodiment of the confusion of ＂culture＂.The thesis starts with Eliot＇s state of life,state of marriage and religious view,etc,excavates the roots of Eliot＇s creating of THE WASTE LAND on the basis of analysing the states of human existence and society THE WASTE LAND reflects.
