摘　　要：理解和翻译英语谚语是了解英语民族和文化的重要渠道。英语谚语主要来自民间、古典文学作品和外来语。英语谚语历史悠久,具有鲜明的民族性和思想性。英语谚语的翻译方法包括直译、意译、直译兼意译及释译,无论采用哪种翻译方式,都要结合翻译的文体、语体及文化背景情况,比较英汉谚语的异同。It is an important channel to know the English people and their culture by means of either understanding or translating English proverbs mainly coming from the people,some classical literary works and foreign languages.With a long history,English proverbs are of unique national characters and great ideological contents.Ways of translating English proverbs mainly include： literal translation,free translation,literal ＋free translation and translation ＋ notes;however,a comparison of the similarities and differences between the styles and culture backgrounds of English and Chinese proverbs should be put into consideration.
