The semantics and frequency of the English modal must have received a great deal of attention in linguistic studies, but little research has been done on the evolution of its syntactic functions and tendency towards quasi-affixization.On the basis of the data extracted from British National Corpus,Corpus of Contemporary American English and Corpus of Historical American English, this study probes into the syntactic changes of must as a modal verb to must as a noun and the must-verb construction. The former change is considered degrammaticalization, the latter grammaticalization. These changes reflect the continual transformation of the cognitive mechanisms involved in the human cognition of the world:categorization, decategorization and recategorization.
