Due to the disputed research findings regarding the effectiveness of recasts on second language acquisition and the possible relationship between learners' perceptions and language learning, this study aims to examine whether learners' differential perceptions of recasts will result in different learning results.A pretest-posttest-delayed posttest experimental design was employed to detect any changes in the participants' knowledge of the English past tense and their ability to use it.A stimulated recall session was administered to tap the participants' perceptions of recasts. Results suggested that learners' perceptions had a significant effect on their language development in the picture description test;there was also an interaction effect involving learners' perceptions on their language development in the oral imitation test. However, the effect of perceptions was not observed in the grammaticality judgment test.Learners' perceptions of recasts seemed to have an impact on their subsequent oral language development.Given the complicated and dynamic process of second language acquisition, further empirical research is still warranted to demonstrate this kind of perception-triggered learning.
