摘　　要：I.Introduction In the field of English and Chinese translation,"faithfulness","intelligibility"and"elegance"are traditional criteria for successful translation.However,there is an endless but a compromise controversy1.Introduction In the field of English and Chinese translation, ＂faithfulness＂, ＂intelli- gibility＂ and ＂elegance＂ are traditional criteria for successful translation. However, there is an endless but a compromise controversy over the agree- ment among ＂faithfulness＂, ＂intelligibility＂ and ＂elegance＂, which seems to lead into a deadlock. This paper tries to apply ＂empathy＂ to English and Chinese translating and throw a new light on English and Chinese translation.
