Based on a study of the results from a survey looking at Chinese students of medium-level Japanese, this paper discusses the challenges facing learners in the application of intransitive verbs. These challenges include: 1) those incurred by non-human forces, 2) those expressing the result of an activity, and 3) those expressing the possibility of the occurrence of an event. Meanwhile, this paper also points out obstacles to the command of intransitive verbs, including the interference of the learners' native language, and an insufficient understanding of a different culture. But the most difficult challenge lies in the insufficient instruction the learners receive from their teachers and the textbooks they use.
