The present paper is a criticism of Prof. Sun Zhili and Dr. Zhou Ye' s appeal for borrowing English punctuation marks to help "standardize" the use of Chinese punctuation marks. It argues that the bor-rowing has to be substantiated by sufficient proofs, otherwise it can undermine the present Chinese punctuation system. It further points out that, as the system of punctuation marks is usually rooted in the tradition of the language to which it belongs and on which its rationality is based, so the standardization of Chinese punctua-tion marks can only be realized by focusing on and adhering to the distinctive features of the Chinese language, rather than by turning to English or other languages for ready-made "standards".
