Based on complexity of epistemology and simplicity of methodology in philosophy, this article introduces and clarifies cognitive increment and cognitive optimization and the relationship in between. This is conducive to understanding the relations between cognition and translation: cognitive increment, as a means, is the process of superimposition of knowledge while cognitive optimization, as an end, is the remodeling of knowledge. A good translation is the outcome of cognitive optimization. Despite the probable reasoning process of metaphorical meaning, the translator' s replication of the original author's process of constructing metaphors can be maximally guaranteed on condition that s/he combines relevance, specific contextual features and intention under the principles of cognitive increment and cognitive optimization, thereby achieving fidelity and validity in metaphor translation.
