Daisuke in Natume Souseki' s novel is a typical epitome of "the superfluous man" in Meiji literature. Scuseki, by combining the dream narrative, the rhetoric of metaphor, and the description of the physical sensations of "the unconscious", fully delineates Daisuke' s spiritual dimensions and connotations. Daisuke evades reality and is hard to establish his "serf" identity in reality, which gives his personality an unrealistic color. Drifting between the old and new cultures, Daisuke suffers from a "split self" and psychological depression. The anxiety is generated from the "compromise" idea attached to the feudal ideology. The temperament is closely related to the unthomnghness of modemizatiou reformation in Meiji times, and also reflects Scuseki' s limitatious on his intepretatlou of "serf-identity".
