摘　　要：本文主要通过对20世纪上半叶美国麻省理工学院(MIT)5位校长的就职演说、公开论文等进行文本分析,研究MIT对于教育本质和人才培养问题的回答。20世纪上半叶MIT的校长们相信,理想的大学教育首先是培养公民、因而首先是公民教育。同时,现代大学教育必须开展良好的科学教育,并且科学教育的首要目的不是培养科学家和工程师,而是为民主社会培养现代公民。此外,20世纪上半叶的5位MIT校长也分别都对教育有着独特的理解,提出了同辈教育、生活教育、教学与研究相结合等理念。This study, by analyzing presidential papers, investigates the reply of the five presidents of Mas- sachusetts Institute of Technology （MIT） for the essence of education and the training of talents in the first half of the 20th century. The results show that the desired university education shall put a top priority on the cultivation of citizens in the first place, hence the emphasis on citizen education. In the meantime, the five presidents in MIT in the first half of the 20th century had their own unique un- derstanding of education, additionally, they pointed out that the education of peers, life education and teaching shall be combined with research and the like.
