Objective To explore the differences of self-concept and mental health between obese and normal body weight junior school students, and the relationship between their self-concept and mental health. Methods Junior school students from grade one to grade three were surveyed with Tennessee Self Concept Scale and Symptom Cheek List 90 (SCL'90). Results The score of self-concept of obese junior school students was lower than that of normal body weight junior school students ( t = -13. 416, P 〈 0. 000 ) , while the score of mental health was higher (t = 4. 014, P 〈 0.05 ). There had significant negative correlation between self concept and mental health ( r = -0. 142to -0. 301 ). Factors of physiological self, psychological self and self-identity can predict mental health of the obese students. Conclusion The factor of self-concept has significant influence on mental health of obese junior school students.
