Under the influence of spatial turn, the issue of space has been a heated topic in the scene of German literature in recent years. This thesis paper begins with the basic concept of "literary space" from Barbara Piatti, a scholar in Ger- man contemporary literary geography, and combines with the fight in recent years between America and Germany over a 500 - year - old world map. This thesis pays close attention to this hot issue and summarize in a longitudinal way the ima- ges of "the New Continent "--America in the German literature since the end of 15th century. This thesis thus investigates the portrait outlines of America as "literary space" in the German literature. It can be discerned that depictions of America as "the other" by German writers wander between hope and disappointment, affirmation and denial and that with the devel- opment of history these depictions reflect cognitive features at different stages.
