The development of semantic category knowledge in Mandarin-English bilingual children in the United States

摘  要:通过分析问卷调查和控制实验数据,本文从词汇上位范畴联想和词汇同级对比联想两方面研究了48名美国华裔4-7岁儿童汉英双语词汇语义范畴的发展特征。研究表明:年龄和语言经验对汉英双语儿童词汇语义发展均有显著影响,4-5岁和6-7岁年龄组词汇范畴能力差异显著;头胎儿童组汉语词汇范畴能力显著优于非头胎儿童组;英语词汇范畴能力两组未见显著差异;双语儿童英语词汇范畴能力显著优于汉语词汇范畴能力;同级对比联想能力显著优于上位对比联想能力。研究结果为美国华裔儿童双语词汇教学及我国儿童外语词汇范畴教学的策略提供了实证依据。Using parent questionnaire and controlled experiments,this article examined semantic category development among 4-to 7-year old Mandarin-English bilingual children of Chinese heritage in the United States through tasks on category association and contrast association.The results showed that both age and language experience had significant effects on children's semantic category knowledge development.Specifically,older children(6-7year olds)performed much better than younger ones(4-5year olds)on most tasks.First-born children outperformed later-born children on the Mandarin tasks but the two groups performed similarly on the English tasks.Children's semantic knowledge in English surpassed their knowledge in Mandarin and their responses to contrast association were more accurate than those to category association.These findings have implications for bilingual education in both US and Chinese contexts.
