This empirical study addresses, via sentence sorting tasks, whether there is a significant difference between English and Chinese in construction sorting performance and whether Chi nese-L1 users also demonstrate a developmental pattern for Chinese-L1 constructions. The results show that Chinese adults tended to sort sentences on the basis of constructions, and they exhibited no significant difference in the sorting performance between the two languages. However, children were found to sort Chinese sentences primarily based on verbs, and there existed a significant difference between children and adults in this regard. The findings suggest that constructions play a significant role in the prediction of sentence meaning in Chinese and English alike, and that constructions can be learned.
