摘  要:严歌苓在其代表作《扶桑》中着力探讨了女性的"自由",之后出版的《第九个寡妇》延续了这一主题。两部小说中的女主人公扶桑、王葡萄的人格结构都以"稚钝"和"灵性"为主要质素,小说的叙事也将这两种质素置于"特殊环境"中,帮助主人公走上自由的坦途。而细究之下会发现,严歌苓省略了环境和遭际参与人格塑造、激发人性潜质的过程,完全诉诸天分的灵性、稚钝两种质素反而阻碍了小说对"女性-人性"问题的深入挖掘和探索,因而人在环境和遭际中的自由问题被化约为"苦难中的偷欢"。实际上,自由之路是不可能存在坦途的。In her magnum opus Fusang, Yan Geling explores the theme of "women' s freedom," a theme she follows up in a later work - The Ninth Widow. In both works the heroines are characterized by "purity" and "spirituality," two central qualities that lead the heroines to freedom even in "special environment. " A closer look at the two novels, however, leads to the discovery that the novelist' s overempha- sis on the born qualities instead of social environment and personal experience - Which are treated simply in the context of "embittered sexuality" - and the interactive effect of the two on the development of the heroines' personality in particular, has to some extent impeded her from exploring deeper into the issue of "femininity and humanity. " As a matter of fact, there are no easy paths to freedom.
