Indoor experiments were conducted to compare the reactions of black porgy (Sparus macrocephalus), with 11.5~13.5cm body length, and banded grouper (Epinephelus awoara), with 11.5~17.5cm body length, to an immovable bubble curtain (IBC) with 0.5mm air hole diameter and 5.0cm air hole spacing. The results show that black porgy swam actively and banded grouper swam sluggishly. In the 1h control experiments, the average numbers of fish passing through the air pipe (or the middle line of the experimental tank) were 448 for black porgy and 118 for banded grouper. The behavior of these two species of fish had changed distinctly since the IBC existed. At the beginning of aeration, these two fishes swam fast to escape from the bubble curtain. During aeration their swimming became faster and more agitated and sometimes swam fast through the IBC. The average numbers of fish passing through the bubble curtain in the 1h aeration experiments decreased to 117 for black porgy and 21 for banded grouper. Obvious intercepting effects of the IBC on these fishes were observed, but the IBC was not a complete obstacle to them. The average obstructing rates were 75.1% for black porgy and 82.4% for banded grouper. The results suggest that there was no significant difference between the obstructing rates of the IBC on these two fish species. In addition, these two fishes had no marked adaptation to the IBC during the experimental period.
