Objective: To investigate the effect of micronutrients supplementation on growth retardation of children. Methods: 156 children whose heights were-1 SD below reference of WHO were included. They were randomly assigned to five groups: negative group, +Zn group, +Zn+Ca group, +Zn+Ca+VA group and +Ca+VA group. Supplementation continued for twelve months. Other 34 children of normal height were acted as normal group. Anthropometric and dietary investigation were measured every three or six months. Bone density was measured before and after supplementation. Results: 1. The height velocity in +Zn group (7.84 cm per year) and +Zn+Ca group (7.70 cm per year) was significantly higher than negative group (6.74 cm per year); 2. The weight velocity in +Zn+Ca+VA group (2.57 kg per year) and in +Ca+VA group (2.77 kg per year) was also significantly higher than negative group (2.19 kg per year). 3. Micronutrients supplementation could modify the delayed bone age, but did not accelerate the bone maturity. Conclusion: Micronutrients deficiency is the main problem that affect the growth of children, and proper supplementation can accelerate the growth velocity and modify the delayed bone age.
