Objective To explore the clinical significance of expressions of Smo and Gli1 of breast carcinoma tissues. Methods The protein expressions of Smo and Gli1 were detected by the immunohistochemistry method in 79 cases of human breast cancer,68 normal tissues adjacent to cancer, and 42 breast fibroadenoma tissues. Results The expressions of Smo and Gli1 were significantly higher in breast carcinoma than those in adjacent normal tissues( 73. 4% vs. 21.4%,77. 2% vs. 19. 0%,P〈0. 05) and breast fibroadenoma( 73. 4% vs. 20. 6%,77. 2% vs. 23. 5%,P〉0. 05).The expressions of Smo and Gli1 were correlated with the TNM stage and axillary lymph node metastasis( P〈0. 05). The expressions of Smo and Gli1 had no correlation with the age and pathologic type of the patients( P〈0. 05). The expressions of Smo was significantly correlated with that of Gli1 in breast cancer( r = 0. 527,P〈0. 05). Conclusions The abnormal high expressions of Smo and Gli1 in the Hedgehog signal transduction pathway may play an important role in the occurrence and development of breast carcinoma.
