This paper investigates A. S. Byatt's reconstruction of the existence of so-called 'free women 'during the second wave of feminism in A Whistling Woman. Beginning with a discussion of imageries of'metamorphosis'and'disguise',the present paper attempts to illustrate the illusion of those women's self-styled 'freedom'. They are in fact distorted not only as a result of demonization by patriarchal culture, but also as a consequence of their own disguises, which are adopted as a means of survival in society. Those 'free women'thus suffer from denigration and the torture of living a double life. In addition, they are troubled by emotional isolation and a lack of sense of belonging. On the one hand,by exposing the injustice of die-hard patriarchalism,Byatt expresses her sympathy for their struggle for self-development; on the other hand, through re-examining those modern women's 'selves',she argues that excessive pursuit of self-fulfillment can also be an imprisonment, which prevents them from enjoying the essence of 'freedom'.
