摘　　要：作为美国文学史上公认的经典作家,霍桑及其作品不仅被伟大的作家一再提及,更有许多文学、文化史学家对他展开了深入研究。近代甚至还有文学理论家认为霍桑对美国文学的影响可以用"霍桑的传统"这一术语来形容。文章追溯了从19世纪中期到21世纪近150年国外霍桑研究的历史,特别是20世纪后半叶,几乎每一种文学流派,如新批评、神话原型批评、精神分析研究、解构主义、女权主义、新历史主义批评等每一种文学流派都少不了文学理论与霍桑研究的结合。或许这一代代评论家对霍桑及其作品的关注本身就是一个值得研究的课题。As the unanimously acknowledged classic writers, Hawthorne , together with his works has not only been mentioned persistently by those great writers, but been studied thoroughly by numerous literary and cultural theories. When it comes to the modern ages, even some critics coined the terms as ＂Hawthorne Tradition＂. This ar- ticle traced back the academic history of Hawthorne studies for over one hundred and fifty years, from the late 19th century to the early 21st century. Especially during the period from the middle 20th century onwards, every literary criticism, such as new criticism, archetypal criticism, psychoanalytical criticism, female criticism deconstruction- ism, and new historicism has ever made its application to Hawthorne. Perhaps, the phenomenon itself that genera- tions of critics took a great interest in Hawthorne is a worthwhile way for research.
